A Message from Our Principal

Dear Parents,

Where has the summer gone? I’m hoping everyone had a safe and positively eventful summer. The time I’ve been able to spend with my family created some very special memories that will never be forgotten, and it would be my wish you were able to do the same with your families!

I’ve enjoyed throughout the summer seeing many of the students attending, and that have attended Highland Primary, at grocery stores or other locations and events around our area. It always puts a smile on my face as they call out my name or briefly leave their parents to give me a hug and to receive one back in return. I’m truly thankful to be part of such an incredible community. I consider myself a very fortunate person to have the privilege to be around such a great group of kids, parents, teachers, and people in our area.

There’s a saying many of us are familiar with, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I want the community to know how proud I am of our “Village!” Thanks for everything each of you do to support not only your own children, but the other children in our school as well. Many of you take time out of your busy schedules in life to help the classroom teachers with the kids in the classroom. Every little bit helps, and I know it does make a difference to have additional support as we try to help everyone of these children.

As a principal, it’s always stressful for not only me, but also my staff members to make sure all the students are able to progress in many different areas in life during the time we have them in a school year. One of the main concerns is to get them to meet state requirements and to be ready to academically advance. At our elementary level, our 3rd graders are tested at the end of each year to make sure they’ve met the state requirements, and they are compared to other 3rd grade students around the state. I would like everyone to know that once again our kids did fantastic! We outscored the state average in English Language Arts by 16% and in math by 21%. Parents, thank you for the time you put in with your children. More important than any score to me is that we spend time with our kids and that we let them know of their importance to us.

With a new school year starting up again, I want you all to know of my excitement to hear the laugher in the hallways, classrooms, and on the playground again. I’m thankful for all the incredible teachers, staff members, children, and parents that put a smile on my face daily. Thank you for trusting us with your children. We consider it not only a special privilege, but an honor to be part of their educational development. I look forward to another wonderful year at Highland Primary!

Go Lobos!

Roy Owens

Sincerely,

Roy Owens
